Combining dense vector retrieval with sparse lexical retrieval (BM25), usually fused by reciprocal rank fusion.
Why interviewers ask about it
Embeddings fail on rare exact tokens (error codes, IDs, names) because those fragments carry little semantic signal. BM25 fails on paraphrase. The failure modes are complementary.
